Recap: OHRG at Columbus BeerFest

On Saturday, January 14, the Ohio Roller Girls ventured out to the Columbus Convention Center to the Columbus Winter Beerfest, a 120,000 square foot beer festival featuring 150 craft beers and live music benefiting the Big Joe Duskin Music Foundation.  Though the weather outside was cold and icy, over 5,000 + attendees braved the weather to come out.

Once they arrived, guests could bring their coats over to the OHRG’s Hip-Check Coat-Check, where your favorite roller girls took hundreds of coats.  The Columbus Beerfest organizers certainly chose the right group for their coat check!  As 5,000 rambunctious craft beer filled festival goers exited the venue ready for their coats, your OHRG volunteers were hangin’ tough, keeping a cool head while rushing to get coats back to their owners.   Did I mention that there was crowd surfing? There was.

OHRG would like to thank the community for all their generosity and support, as all tips went to the Ohio Roller Girls Travel Fund, to keep us competitive in the North Central Region!

OHRG Announces 2011 Season at Venue Announcement Party

OHRG announced Saturday night that they will return to the Ohio Expo Center during their 2011 Season.

The season opener will be held Saturday, March 12 in the Ohio Building at the Expo Center (aka the State Fairgrounds) versus NEO Roller Derby of Akron, OH.

Season and individual bout tickets are now on sale for home games. Season tickets by far are the best value, giving a substantial discount to those fans who don’t want to miss a minute of the action. See the Tickets Page for more information on 2011 pricing and packages.

Also unveiled at the Season Announcement Party was an updated Ohio Roller Girls logo. The logo will be available on OHRG merch throughout the season and online merch sales are coming soon!

OHRG also collected donations of toiletries and supplies for The Open Shelter throughout the evening, and fans were treated to games and prizes throughout the night.

Beautiful Hair for a Beautiful Cause

OHRG skaters Bratislava Bruiser and Ava Tarr thought of a new way to
give this holiday season. Both skaters visited The Cachet (7792
Olentangy River Rd # B, Columbus) to cut off their long locks to
donate to Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths program. Brandi cut off 8
inches for Bruiser, and Nina cut a whole foot of hair off of Ava’s
head. Beautiful Lengths uses hair donations to build wigs that are
provided to women who have lost their hair from cancer treatments. If
you have long hair and are interested in donating, contact your
hairdresser or The Cachet at 614.841.1821 (tell ‘em OHRG sent you!)

OHRG has the Holiday Spirit!

On Sunday, December 12—the morning after the league’s annual awards
ceremony and banquet, natch—some bold OHRG members braved the snowy
roads to lend a hand for Toys for Tots at Rickenbacker Air Force Base.
(from left) Ava Tarr, Mr. Tarr, Bratislava Bruiser, Phoenix Bunz, Ice-G, Great
Scott, Harley Ryder, and organizer Devil Loxx joined some
Marines and other Toys for Tots volunteers to sort donations in
preparation for their distribution next week. It’s a great pleasure to
know that we are helping local children have a fun holiday this year!
Many thanks to the Marines for coming out to our Skatemare bout to
collect as well as for hosting us for lunch at the base after our
shift.

By Loraine Acid

Who:  Amy D, Wholly Craft, and the Ohio Roller Girls

Where: Wholly Craft and Lucky 13 Hair Salon, Clintonville

When: very recently

Why: because the clothing modeled was fierce, and so were the models

Friday night, October 1 2010, found a group of Ohio Roller Girls exhibiting model behavior in the Clintonville area.  Wholly Craft and designer AmyD  put on a fashion show at the Wholly Craft shop location.  Fun and fresh outfits, hairdos, and sparkly handbags glitzed the runway.
