Meet the Rookies: Ohio Roller Girls Transcript
Nicole: My name is Nicole.
Stephanie: I’m Stephanie and I started July 09.
Angel: Angel, I started two months ago.
Rose: (signing) I’m Roulette Rose. I started last year.
Derby Skaters Come From All Walks of Life
Angel: I am a third year law student. I have a job at a law firm and I sell Mary Kay.
Rose: (signing) I can’t hear my teammates so I have to work extra hard to keep up with what everyone’s doing.
Choco Ison (off screen): What do you do when you aren’t turning left and hitting people?
Stephanie: I’m a nurse.
A Lot Goes Into Running a Roller Derby League
Nicole: I actually lived in Boston Mass. and I was involved with the derby team there. So, um I practiced with the girls, got to know a lot of them. Helped with promotion and I refereed and I did stats. I did everything I could because I knew I was going to try out and then I moved before try outs. So, here I am. The good city of Columbus gets me now.
Challenge Yourself With a Team
Stephanie: My biggest challenge is that generally I am a little bit of a timid person and I really need to get over that. If you are going to hit people and get hit and I’m working on that.
Rose: (signing) I talked about trying out and someone told me I couldn’t do it, so I went and tried out anyways
Roller Derby Yields Many Different Benefits
Stephanie: My big sis Hellvetica, um, she herself has been incredibly supportive and despite the face make-up that she wears on game day she’s actually very sweet.
Nicole: I wanted to meet a group of girls in a new city and have some fun. So, why the hell not, right?
