OHRG Starts off Season with Two Wins over Ft Wayne Derby Girls

OHRG travelled to Ft Wayne, IN on February 19, and kicked off their season with wins for both teams.

First off, Gang Green faced off v. FWDG’s S.W.A.T. team.  Gang Green’s season debut also marked the debut in interleague play for Ice-G, Beastee Bella and Smackie LaRue, as well as the OHRG debut for recent transfer skater and Gang Green co-captain Ava Tarr (formerly of Silicon Valley Rollergirls).

Gang Green held an early lead, and while the S.W.A.T. team fought to come back, their focus on strategy kept them on top throughout. Ultimately, they won 144-112. MVPs for the game were Nukeleophile (Jammer), Ava Tarr (Blocker) and Wendra Woman (Pivot).

The evening’s second game saw OHRG’s Charter Team facing off against the FWDG Bomb Squad in the first WFTDA Sanctioned play of the year for Ohio. The two teams met twice before (once at 2009’s Fall Brawl tournament and once in Columbus in 2010) and both times OHRG came out on top.

(Photo by Marc Lebryk)A 13-point jam by Pippi RipYourStockings with less than 10 minutes left in the second half turned the tides in the favor of the Ohio Roller Girls and gave them the 65-59 victory against the Naptown Roller Girls Tornado Sirens and extended its win streak to four in the 2009 season.
In the most-exciting game of the Ohio season, OHRG and Naptown showed strong defense throughout the bout, trading blow after blow and keeping the game neck and neck the full 60 minutes. In what was a low-scoring affair most of the first half, shut down defense and smart jamming were the names of the game.

The Ohio Roller Girls put up grand slam after grand slam on its way to a 233-52 victory over the Gem City Pistol Whips April 19 in Dayton.

All of Ohio’s jammers were able to have success against an inexperienced Gem City squad playing its first-ever sanctioned WFTDA bout. Thirteen of Ohio’s 14-player team had time at the jammer line averaging more than seven points per jam. Jammer Drrty Grrl led all Ohio scorers with 47 points followed by Wendra Woman with 41 points and Pippi RipYourStockings with 37 points.

But it was the play of the pack that made the difference in Ohio’s first victory of the season. As a team OHRG finished with 156 offensive assists, 81 defensive blocks and 36 jammer knockdowns. OHRG Captain Phoenix Bunz dominated the pack causing havoc on any Gem City jammer who toed the line contributing 24 blocks and nine jammer knockdowns.

The bout got off to a quick start as Ohio put up 66-unanswered points in the first seven jams. Gem City was finally able to score its first five points of the game with a grand slam by captain Racey Rocker after an Ohio jammer was sent to the penalty box on a major penalty.

Gem City was only able to score 16 more points in the first half while Ohio skated to new team records for points scored in a half with 100.

Ohio proved it continues to be a team that plays well after the halftime break surpassing its record-breaking first half performance by 33 points; and it was done with OHRG changing up its starting jammer rotation.

Gem City put together a good performance as the team’s most experienced skater, Seoul Sister, commanded the pack well and helped position her teammates into making some terrific plays during the bout. Gem City also found its star jammer in Racey Rocker who scored 35 of her team’s 52 points.

The Ohio Roller Girls next play the Sioux Falls Roller Dollz (Sioux Falls, S.D.) at 4 p.m. April 25 in Columbus. The Ohio Roller Girls Gang Green will play the opening bout against the Dixie Derby Girls (Huntsville, Ala.) Tickets are on sale now and going fast. Purchase them today.
