What is Roller Derby and how is it played?
Basically there are two teams of five skaters
each. Each team has one scoring position called a jammer - and the jammer
starts at the back. The rest of the skaters are called blockers, and they
form what we call a pack. The blockers get a head start on the jammers, going
at the first whistle, then the jammers start sprinting at the second whistle.
The jammers have to get through the pack and back around anoher lap before
they can start scoring. On their second and future trips through, they get
a point for every opponent they pass. Everyone else tries to stop the other
teams' jammer from passing.
Check out the official standardized rules on the WFTDA
website for all of the derby details.
I want to be a Rollergirl! How do I join?
First off, you must be 21 years old and a female
to joing OHRG. Currently, we are not accepting any new skaters for the 2008
Season. If you are interested in joining, start getting into shape for the
2009 try-outs, which will be held after our season. We also suggest that you
go to some open skates and get a feel for skating before you decide roller
derby is for you. Skaters must also provide their own skates, helmet, wrist
guards, knee pads, and elbow pads before you can come practice with us. Keep watching our home page or our myspace page for announcements of tryouts.
We are always looking for volunteers, support staff and referees if you decide that skating isn't for you! Feel free to email our Volunteer Coordinator to find out more about how you can be involved with the OHRG!
I want to help, but don't want to be a roller
girl. Is there anything else I can do?

a roller girl, but you still want to help? Well, we'd love to have you as
a volunteer! We are looking for volunteers to help out with our upcoming season
starting in April. Feel free to email our Volunteer
Coordinator to find out more about how you can help.
