01.13.2007 | Violet Crime is the First Queen of the
Chairs for 2007
Saturday, January 13, marked the first Ohio Roller Girls’ event
of the New Year and what’s better then Full Contact Musical Chairs to
get fans ready for the hard-hitting action of Season 2? The event was held
at Wall Street in front of over 400 screaming Ohio Roller Girls’ fans.
The layout of the club was perfect for the event, as the ladies and their
chairs took center stage in the heart of the downstairs dance floor. This
marked the first public appearance of this year’s crop of rookies, who
will be suiting up to play this April.
The first of five rounds kicked off a little after 8pm. The first four rounds were divided into a set of veterans, then two rounds of rookies, another set of veterans, and then a championship round at the end. Each round had two winners which allowed for an every woman for herself final round pitting 8 skaters against each other. The first round was filled with surprises. The first person out on the night was Living Dead Girl for the Sprockettes who many had pegged to win the entire tournament! The rest of the group teamed against her though to get her out early. Speaking of surprises, event organizer Charlie’s Angel (complete with feathered wings) was one of the two winners to advance into the final round. Dixie Heartless, a FCMC veteran that has made it to the finals before, cinched a spot as well.
No one from the Ohio Roller Girls knew what to expect for the following two rounds as the rookies took center stage. Nervous chatter and wide-eyed stares quickly gave way to snarling growls and unabashed violence. The rookies took FCMC to new levels as the standard wrestling matches gave way to girls being literally picked up and suplexed out of their chairs! I believe we are going to see this aggression translate very easily to the flat track come spring. Gena Cide, Harley Ryder, Handle Barz, and Bren Diesel all managed to scratch and claw their way to the finals.
The veterans seemed to take a cue from the rookies in the fourth round by stepping the action up even more. Body parts and chairs flew as the music stopped and the violence began. Black Eye Bully teammates/pivots Wild Irish Rose and Violet Crime managed to fight their way side by side into the final round.
After a half hour of drinks and dancing, the stage was set for the final round of the night. Dixie Heartless, Charlie’s Angel, Gena Cide, Harley Ryder, Handle Barz, Bren Diesel, Wild Irish Rose, and Violet Crime were prepared to do whatever it took to walk out as the first Queen of the Chairs for 2007! The round was intense as many of the girls were “tied” for a chair, which meant we headed to the penalty wheel and our penalty mistresses Triptease and LunaChicken to help us break the tie. This lead to several close calls as well as controversy. The final face off of the night pitted Violet Crime against Handle Barz. Barz, earlier in the round had received a penalty from the penalty wheel and was forced to play the rest of the game in a housecoat while carrying a baby doll. If at any point she dropped the doll, she was automatically out. When the music stopped Barz, had the upper hand and managed to snag the chair but the always vigilant Violet Crime knocked the baby doll out of Handle Barz’ grasp as she was sitting on the chair. The cheers of the crowd soon became a mix of cheering and boos as referee Justice McLaw (2006 Most Hated Ref Award Winner), made the call and awarded the win to a very tired and sore but nonetheless proud, Violet Crime. Handle Barz was a great sport about the whole thing as she hugged Violet and congratulated her on the victory.
It was another great Ohio Roller Girls event and the rest of the evening was spent partying with the OHRG faithful. If you didn’t get a chance to come to Wall Street to see the action, then mark your calendars because the roller girls and FCMC are coming to Skully's, Saturday night February 17! If you have never seen an Ohio Roller Girls event live then you are missing out on one hell of a good time, so be there! --The Tank
